WASHINGTON – On Tuesday, a group of U.S. senators including Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) and Ranking Member Rand Paul, M.D. (R-Ky.), have raised concerns about the case of Jose Antonio Ibarra, a Venezuelan migrant charged with the murder of Laken Hope Riley, a nursing student at Augusta University.
Ibarra's checkered past includes illegal entry into the U.S. in 2022 and subsequent encounters with law enforcement. Despite his criminal history, Ibarra was never detained by Immigration Customs and Enforcement (ICE).
The senators' letter to DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas questions the agency's ability to protect the country in light of Riley's tragic murder. They have requested all documents related to Ibarra and communications between DHS, CBP, ICE, and other law enforcement agencies.
The senators' concerns reflect a larger debate on immigration enforcement and border security in the United States.
