A new mural honoring Bob Uecker is being painted on the north facade of the Wintrust Financial Center in downtown Milwaukee, artist Mauricio Ramirez said on May 29. The project, located at 731 N. Jackson St., features a large portrait of the late Brewers broadcaster and is expected to become a significant city landmark.
Ramirez, a Mexican-American muralist with family roots in Milwaukee, described working nearly 100 feet above ground as he focused on capturing Uecker’s likeness. “Once you see facial features at that size, you just become really intimate with the muse, which is Bob Uecker, the legend himself,” Ramirez said. “It’s a very special moment, creating this artwork on a monumental size.”
The mural spans approximately 80 by 105 feet and required about 150 gallons of paint for its base before any details were added. Ramirez noted that creating such a large-scale portrait involves unique challenges including working at heights and managing industrial coatings. “If you want to talk about levels of difficulty, it’s level 10,” he said. “You’re dealing with heights, you’re dealing with the weather, you’re dealing with exterior surfaces… My goal is to make this the best possible portrait in the country and in the world.”
The project was commissioned by the Wintrust Financial Center’s ownership group with support from Milwaukee Downtown Business Improvement District No. 21 and Visit Milwaukee. Uecker’s family was involved in approving the final design for accuracy and tribute.
Ramirez expects his work will last due to its location on the building’s north side away from direct sunlight. Upon completion next month, building owners plan to hold a tailgate-themed ribbon-cutting celebration for community members and fans.
“I’m happy so far, and I’m having a blast painting it,” Ramirez said regarding his progress.
