The Milwaukee Brewers lost 11-3 to the Los Angeles Dodgers on May 24, ending their nine-game regular-season win streak against Los Angeles, which included six consecutive wins at American Family Field.
The defeat came as Brewers starter Robert Gasser struggled in the fourth inning after a strong start. The loss also highlighted pitching challenges for Milwaukee, as the staff issued a season-high 11 walks during the game.
Gasser had shown improvement early in the game compared to his previous outing. “The cutter felt really good today. Had a good feel for it,” Gasser said. He positioned himself well defensively and helped prevent an early run but ran into trouble in the fourth inning, allowing back-to-back doubles and a three-run homer by Teoscar Hernández that put the Dodgers ahead. Manager Pat Murphy commented, “I thought Gass did a really nice job, better than his previous outing… But there are some things to work on, obviously.” Murphy discussed concerns about Gasser possibly tipping pitches, “There’s a huge emphasis on making sure they can’t get your signs from second base… He got caught up and gave away some pitches, and it ended up hurting him.”
Gasser acknowledged tipping pitches is something he needs to address: “I did look back once and saw [the runner on second] moving his hands,” he said. “I haven’t looked in depth at it. I saw some of the photos, but it seemed like my hand was getting covered. Maybe they had something, maybe not.” Reflecting on his performance overall this season following Tommy John surgery last year, Gasser said, “I’m not pleased. This is a winning ball club, and I came in and was part of two losses… I’ve got to minimize free passes and keep attacking the strike zone.”
Milwaukee took an early lead with three runs off Dodgers starter Roki Sasaki in the first inning but was held scoreless for the remainder of the game by Sasaki and four relievers. The Dodgers bullpen has now pitched 36 consecutive scoreless innings—their longest such stretch since 1893.
Murphy credited Los Angeles’s pitching staff after their performance: “They’re good. They throw on the edges… They threw with command. Credit them,” Murphy said. “They’re a really good team, and I’m proud of our guys for how we’ve played them. We’ll be back.”
