The Milwaukee men’s track and field team competed in the first day of the Horizon League Outdoor Championships at Elaine Leigh Track & Field Complex in Rochester, Michigan, on May 8. The Panthers finished the opening day in fourth place with 11 points, behind Youngstown State, Purdue Fort Wayne, and Northern Kentucky.
The event’s highlight was Josh Cygan winning the discus throw for a second consecutive year with a distance of 51.76 meters, earning 10 points for Milwaukee. Aiden Janke also participated in the discus event and finished eighth after throwing 44.38 meters.
Trent Oiler led after five events in the decathlon with a total of 3,387 points. He placed among the top three finishers in four events on Friday: he won the 400-meter run with a season-best time of 49.44 seconds; took second place in both the 100-meter dash (11.35 seconds) and shot put (11.37 meters); came third in long jump (6.29 meters); and ended seventh in high jump (1.70 meters). Trevor Boyer was also among the top ten decathletes midway through competition with a score of 2,724 points.
Other performances included Zach Moss finishing fourteenth in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 32:14.89 while Harper Fahey and Alex Anewenter completed their heats of the 1500-meter run with times of 3:58.96 and 4:06 respectively.
The Milwaukee Panthers Men’s Track and Field Team participates throughout indoor and outdoor seasons as part of NCAA Division I within the Horizon League according to their official website. The team is affiliated with University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee where it contributes to campus athletic tradition while supporting student-athletes’ academic pursuits.
Milwaukee will continue competing on Saturday for day two of championships hosted by Oakland University.
