Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley marked 414 Day on April 14 by releasing a video message in which he celebrated Milwaukee and encouraged residents to support local businesses, visit parks, and engage with the community.
Crowley’s remarks highlight the importance of civic pride and participation in Milwaukee. The celebration aims to bring attention to the city’s culture and foster unity among its residents.
“Milwaukee raised me, shaped me, and continues to inspire me every day,” said County Executive Crowley. “It’s a place I’m extremely proud not only to serve, but to raise my family in. As your County Executive, I am committed to building a healthier, safer, and stronger Milwaukee for everyone who calls the 414 home.”
To mark the occasion, special admission rates were offered at local attractions. The Milwaukee County Zoo provided $4.14 admission all day for county residents. Similarly, Mitchell Park Domes offered $4.14 admission throughout the day along with an evening event featuring live entertainment.
Education is a key aspect of life in Milwaukee County. For the 2023-24 school year, Oak Creek High School had the highest enrollment with 2,223 students; HAPA-Hmong American Peace Academy K3-12 followed with 1,894 students; Franklin High School was third with 1,606 students according to the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. Of all students attending county schools during this period—116,758 in total—Black students comprised about one-third (33%, or roughly 38,530), white students accounted for about 29% (33,860), while Hispanic students made up nearly one-quarter (24.5%, or approximately 28,606) as reported by the same source.
Demographic data also show that multiracial students represented about 5.5% of county enrollment during this school year according to state figures, while Pacific Islander students were less than one percent at just over one-tenth of a percent as documented by official statistics.
The annual observance of 414 Day underscores efforts by local leaders like Crowley to celebrate diversity and promote engagement across different sectors including education.
