A strong start to the second half enabled Louisville to secure a 4-0 victory over Milwaukee’s men’s soccer team on Tuesday at Lynn Stadium. The Panthers, now with a record of 6-4-4, showed improvement after halftime but were unable to recover from an early goal by the Cardinals, who share the same season record.
Milwaukee head coach Kris Kelderman reflected on the experience: “It was a 4-0 loss, but I still believe that it was a good experience for our guys,” he said. Kelderman acknowledged the challenge posed by playing against a highly regarded program like Louisville, which has produced MLS draftees and advanced in past NCAA tournaments. “Mid-majors don’t get to pick and choose when they have opportunities to play an ACC team,” he added.
Louisville entered this non-conference finale ranked No. 24 in preseason polls and displayed their strength early on. MKE goalkeeper Daniel Ibarra made an important save in the fifth minute, but the Cardinals broke through with their first goal at 17:30 into the match. Gage Guerra scored his eighth goal of the season shortly thereafter, doubling Louisville’s lead.
Milwaukee struggled offensively in the first half, managing only one shot on target from Pascal Leatherman before halftime. The Panthers went into the break trailing 3-0 and conceded another goal just seconds into the second period.
“I was disappointed in two of their four goals,” Kelderman admitted. He cited miscommunication between players and lapses in marking as areas needing improvement. Despite these setbacks, Milwaukee created more chances later in the game but could not capitalize.
Louisville dominated with advantages across key statistics: shots (14-6), shots on goal (7-4), and corner kicks (5-1). Ibarra recorded three saves for Milwaukee.
Following this defeat, Coach Kelderman remains optimistic about his team’s prospects: “We talked after the game and I think our group is still really in a good place.” With conference play ahead, he emphasized focusing on upcoming matches starting with Northern Kentucky.
Milwaukee will resume league competition this Saturday against Northern Kentucky at noon CT.
