The Milwaukee Panthers men’s track and field team competed in two meets on April 25, delivering several season-best and personal-best performances as they prepare for the upcoming Horizon League Championships. The team participated in both the Jim Freeman/Clark Wood Open in Louisville, Kentucky, and the Drake Alternative meet at UW-Whitewater.
These results are significant as they come just two weeks before the conference championship weekend, providing momentum for the Panthers as they look to fine-tune their events. The Milwaukee Panthers Men’s Track and Field Team competes in NCAA Division I as part of the Horizon League, according to the official website.
Head coach Andrew Basler said, “We had a great day at the track with our Louisville and Whitewater groups. A lot of season and personal bests across all the events, which is exactly what you are looking for two weeks out from conference championship weekend.” In Louisville, Josh Cygan led with a victory in discus after throwing a season-best 52.86 meters. Basler said Cygan could have thrown even further if wind conditions were different: “Josh had another solid day in the ring, throwing a season best in the discus. If the wind was a little different for that event, he was primed to throw a lot further.”
Basler also praised his young 400-meter crew: “Bauschelt continued to shave more time off his personal best. Buford executed the first 200-meter of his race which set up his big PR of 47.65.” Ty Bauschelt finished sixth with a time that ranks fifth in program history (47.25), while Anthony Buford placed eighth (47.65), now seventh all-time.
At UW-Whitewater’s Drake Alternative meet, Dylan Longworth finished second in an 800-meter dash career-best (1:54.04), followed by Wade Duffek’s fourth-place finish (1:54.32). Talon Gamez rounded out top finishes with eighth place (1:57.04). Alex Anewenter secured eighth place in the 1500 meters with another personal best (4:03.86).
Freshman Tyler Dahlie earned triple jump honors with a leap of 14.07 meters; he also cleared a season-high mark of 1.93 meters for seventh place in high jump while Trent Oiler broke into sub-50 seconds territory during his first collegiate outdoor race over this distance.
The Milwaukee Panthers Men’s Track and Field Team participates throughout indoor and outdoor seasons from its base in Milwaukee, Wisconsin according to its official website. The team contributes to athletic tradition at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee according to its official website, supporting student-athletes balancing academics alongside athletics as noted by university sources.
Looking ahead to their final regular-season competitions—the Gary Wieneke Memorial (Urbana-Champaign) and Badger Challenge (Madison) May 1–2—Basler concluded: “With one weekend of regular season left, we will be looking to fine tune some events leading up to the Horizon League Championships.”
