The Milwaukee men’s cross country team competed at the Phoenix Open in Green Bay, Wisconsin, on Saturday. The Panthers placed sixth out of nine teams with a total score of 152 points.

Sam Schreiber led the team, finishing seventh overall with a time of 25:40.6. Head coach Andrew Basler commented on Schreiber’s performance and the team’s adjustment to the race distance: “The first time seeing the 8k distance is always an adjustment,” Basler said. “Sam Schreiber ran a really solid effort. He is only going to continue to get stronger with each passing week.”

Will Whiteis was the next Panther to finish, placing 24th and posting a time of 26:07.5. Whiteis improved his performance from last year’s Phoenix Open by reducing his time by 29 seconds.

Aidan Sosnowski finished in 36th place with a time of 26:38.7, while Alex Anewenter made his debut for Milwaukee, coming in 42nd at 27:06.1.

Coach Basler emphasized the importance of continued growth for his athletes as the season progresses: “As the men move through the season, they will need to continue to challenge themselves to run with confidence and compete amidst uncomfortableness,” he said.

The Panthers will have a break before their next competition at the Rumble at the Fort Invitational in Fort Wayne, Indiana, scheduled for September 20.
