The Milwaukee Panthers women’s tennis team ended a demanding week with a 6-1 loss to Northern Illinois University on Sunday at the Nelson Tennis Center in DeKalb, Illinois. The match marked the third contest of the week for Milwaukee, whose record now stands at 1-4 this season.
Milwaukee started strong by winning one of the doubles matches, but Northern Illinois took control and secured their eighth win in nine outings. Nel Van Hout delivered Milwaukee’s only point, extending her singles winning streak to five matches and improving her season record to 11-1 after defeating Theodora Kousiou 7-5, 6-2 at No. 2 singles.
“Northern Illinois competed at a high level today and earned the result,” head coach Mark Goldin said. “We are still a bit shorthanded due to injuries, but I was proud of how our group stepped in and battled. Nel’s win in singles was a bright spot, and there were stretches where we showed real fight. We’re looking forward to a big week of practice as we get ready for local rival Marquette.”
In doubles play, Nadiia Konieva and Sara Simonova evened things up with a 6-2 victory at No. 2 doubles before Northern Illinois clinched the doubles point with wins at positions one and three.
Emilia Durska had a close match at No. 3 singles but ultimately lost in three sets (6-3, 3-6, 6-1).
Next on the schedule for Milwaukee is an away match against Marquette on Friday evening.
