The Milwaukee Panthers women’s tennis team will resume Horizon League competition at home, hosting Youngstown State on Friday and Cleveland State on Saturday, according to an April 1 announcement. Friday’s match against Youngstown State is set for 11 a.m. at River Glen Elite, while Saturday’s contest with Cleveland State will take place at North Shore Elite in Glendale at 8 a.m. The program will also celebrate Senior Day on Saturday, honoring Nadiia Konieva, Laure Razet, and Sara Simonova.
These matches are important as the Panthers seek to improve their standing within the conference after returning from spring break matches in Florida. The team has faced injuries but looks to capitalize on its recent successes and solid home record.
Youngstown State enters the weekend with an 8-9 record this spring and is led by head coach Mickael Sopel, who has guided the Penguins to eight league postseason titles and multiple NCAA tournament appearances. Key singles players include Hanna Telzynska (15-14) and Yeseniia Ovcharova (13-16), while Lorena Cedeno (13-10) and Yoana Dudova (13-11) lead in doubles wins. Cleveland State comes off a strong previous season but currently holds a 5-13 overall record under seventh-year head coach Frank Polito. Ella Franz and Leah Geisz both have twelve singles victories this year.
The Panthers themselves are coming off two losses during their Florida trip but have seen individual successes this season. Nel Van Hout earned Horizon League Singles Player of the Week honors after extending her win streak to eight earlier in the year. The doubles team of Konieva and Simonova was also recognized for their performance against Marquette and UChicago.
The current roster features student-athletes from eight countries, balancing academics with athletics as part of NCAA Division I competition according to the official website. Head coach Mark Goldin is in his third year leading the program after previously serving as an assistant coach from 2009 through 2012.
The Milwaukee Panthers Women’s Tennis Team competes in dual matches and tournaments throughout each season according to its official website. The program forms part of Panthers athletics at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee as indicated on its website and seeks to help student-athletes maintain balance between studies and sports as noted by the university.
Looking ahead, Milwaukee will conclude regular season play next week with road matches against Northern Kentucky on April 17 followed by IU Indy on April 18.
