The Milwaukee women’s tennis team was eliminated from the Horizon League Championships after a 4-1 loss to Youngstown State in the tournament semifinals on April 25. The match took place at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Cincinnati, Ohio.
This result marks the second consecutive year that Milwaukee has been defeated by Youngstown State at this stage of the tournament. The Panthers had previously beaten the Penguins earlier in the season but could not replicate that success during postseason play.
Head coach Mark Goldin said, “I am proud of the team for an amazing season. There were lots of ups and downs, but we were always ready to compete. Congratulations to Coach Sopel and the YSU team – they are always a nice and respectful team to play and a very well-coached team. They played great tennis and were the better team today.” Milwaukee started strong by winning both No. 1 and No. 2 doubles matches, with Nadiia Konieva/Sara Simonova defeating Hanna Telzynska/Yoana Dudova (6-3) and Laure Razet/Nel Van Hout beating Yeseniia Ovcharova/Line Greyling (6-3). However, Youngstown State swept singles matches at each of the top four lines.
The match concluded not only Milwaukee’s run in this year’s championship but also marked the end of collegiate careers for seniors Nadiia Konieva, Laure Razet, and Sara Simonova.
