The Milwaukee women’s tennis team opened their home season with a commanding 6-1 victory over Providence at River Glen Elite on Sunday morning. Head coach Mark Goldin praised the team’s efforts, stating, “The team really earned the match today. They worked really hard over break on their fitness and it really is showing.”

Milwaukee (2-0) swept the doubles matches against Providence (0-2), marking their first win over a Big East opponent since February 2007. Goldin commented on the team’s progress, saying, “We’ve got a new team, a new look. I really like the energy they are bringing early in the season.”

In doubles play, Nadiia Konieva and Nikola Nikolajeva quickly defeated Allison Root and Flora Eidson 6-0 at No. 1. Sara Simonova and Laure Razet followed with another 6-0 win at No. 2.

In singles action, Nikolajeva was dominant again, winning her match against Eidson with a score of 6-0, 6-1. Emilia Durska contributed to Milwaukee’s lead by defeating Lauren Carson 6-1, 6-3 at No. 5 singles.

Konieva secured the overall team victory with her performance against Camila Barrera at No. 1 singles, winning 6-3, 6-1. Razet added to the tally with a victory at No. 3 singles, while Simonova clinched her match at No. 4 after coming from behind to win in straight sets.

Next on Milwaukee’s schedule are matches against in-state rivals Wisconsin and Marquette this weekend.
