Jacob Misiorowski continued to set new standards for power pitching on May 25, throwing eight pitches at 103 mph or more in the first inning and reaching triple digits 57 times during the Milwaukee Brewers’ game against the St. Louis Cardinals at American Family Field.
Misiorowski tied his career high with 12 strikeouts, becoming the first pitcher in Major League Baseball to reach 100 strikeouts this season. He did not allow a hit until the sixth inning and finished his outing after seven innings, lowering his season earned run average to 1.83 through eleven starts. Misiorowski received a standing ovation from over 35,000 fans following his final pitch.
“That’s what I do,” Misiorowski said. “I throw hard.”
Brewers manager Pat Murphy said, “That’s really special. It’s pitching, too. Not just throwing. Pitching. He’s worked hard. He’s earned it.” Christian Yelich contributed offensively with a two-run home run as part of Milwaukee’s three-run first inning.
According to Brewers Major League pitching coordinator Jim Henderson, Misiorowski’s increased velocity is due in part to offseason work focused on lower body strength: “In the offseason, that was the focus, and I think I came out better on the other side,” Misiorowski said.
Statistically, Misiorowski threw more pitches at or above various velocity thresholds than any other starter since pitch tracking began in 2008—including fourteen more pitches at or above 100 mph than any previous major league outing and twenty-two pitches at or above 102 mph against St. Louis alone.
