Yesterday, Senators Ron Johnson and Chuck Grassley released records revealing that the FBI obtained cell phones belonging to former President Donald Trump and former Vice President Mike Pence. This was part of the Arctic Frost investigation, a probe into Trump’s activities. The senators addressed their concerns in a letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi and FBI Director Kash Patel.

The investigation, which began in April 2022, was initiated by FBI agent Timothy Thibault. According to the records, Thibault prioritized this investigation over others, despite it being against protocol. “Sunshine is the best disinfectant,” wrote Johnson and Grassley. They emphasized the need for transparency regarding the actions of the DOJ and FBI.

The released documents outline several updates on Arctic Frost’s progress:

– Between April 22-25, 2022, the FBI coordinated interviews with multiple field offices and started acquiring government phones from Trump and Pence.
– By May 2-3, 2022, communications between Trump’s team members and Republican electors were under analysis.
– On May 10, 2022, efforts were made to contact individuals nationwide for interviews.
– From May 13-17, 2022, Trump and Pence’s phones were entered as evidence. Discussions about merging investigations with the DOJ Office of Inspector General (OIG) also took place.
– Between May 21-24, 2022, plans for additional interviews with former administration officials were made.
– By May 27, 2022, approximately 50 interviews across seven states were planned.

The investigation required significant resources; within four days in June 2022 alone, $16,000 was spent on travel for interviews and subpoenas.

Johnson and Grassley’s letter aims to ensure accountability within federal agencies: “It is important that every individual at your agencies maintains the highest level of professionalism.”
