Kenosha Rev. Georgette Wonders is being remembered as someone who spent her life going above and beyond to help everyone she encountered.
"She was all about 'kindness is contagious,” Albert McCain told Fox 6 News. “It was such a beautiful thing because in the world today, you don`t find that with anyone. To hear that she is gone -- I can`t wrap my mind around it. Just walking down the street -- if you see a homeless man, you guarantee Rev. Wonders helped him at one point in time.”
Wonders died April 11; Fox 6 reported. She was in an accident outside a McDonald’s restaurant April 8.
According to Kenosha Police, Wonders dropped her debit card and opened her car door to grab it. When she did this, she took her foot off the brake and the car began inching forward toward the restaurant. Wonders soon found herself pinned between the door to the restaurant and her car.
She was in critical condition until she passed away, Fox 6 reported. Her death sent shockwaves through the community, with many struggling to make sense of any of it.
“I broke down and cried,” McCain said.
For three days, Wonders was hospitalized before succumbing to her injuries April 11, according to Fox 6. April 13 marked the first Sunday service without the reverend, who spent the last 20 years at Unitarian Universalist church.
Sensing all the grief now being felt by the community, former church president Marge Krupp told Fox, “You only grieve what you love, and don’t stop loving. Love and grief will be part of it.”
A memorial service to honor Wonders was held April 14 at St. Mary's Lutheran Church on 80th Street in Kenosha.
Krupp said while she will miss Wonders, she takes solace knowing the reverend’s spirit will live on.
"She donated her organs, so she truly lives on in others," she said.
Wonders is survived by her son and her wife, Hope.
