In the mind of Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers, the reasons for backing President Joe Biden’s signing of the Respect for Marriage Act are irrefutable.
“Our kids deserve to grow up in a world where they're free to be who they are and marry who they love,” Evers tweeted not long after Biden stamped the legislation that’s seen as a step forward for same-sex and interracial couples with his signature.
In doing so, Biden’s move officially renders the more than two-decade old Defense of Marriage Act that defined marriage as a union between a man and a woman and allowed states to refuse to recognize same sex marriages performed in other states as null and void.
While still a senator, CNN reports Biden voted in favor of the legislation before announcing his support for same-sex unions more than ten years ago.
With Respect for Marriage now designated as a federal law, unions between same-sex and mixed-race couples are legalized, meaning states, though still not required to issue marriage licenses to same sex couples, will be required to recognize such couplings performed in other states.
Earlier this month, to mark the occasion, Biden played host to a celebration where he was joined by the likes of Vice President Kamala Harris, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, with FOX News reporting the celebration was all lit up in the colors of the rainbow, the symbol that members of the LGBTQA+ community use to represent equality.
