U.S. Senator Ron Johnson of Wisconsin has joined forces with Senators Chuck Grassley of Iowa and Ben Cardin of Maryland to call on President Joe Biden to address the issue of stalled U.S.-China adoptions. The initiative, led by Representatives Erin Houchin from Indiana and Val Hoyle from Oregon, has gathered support from 103 members of Congress.
The lawmakers have written a letter urging President Biden to advocate for families affected by China's decision to end intercountry adoptions for those without Chinese familial ties. They emphasized that approximately 300 children in China, some with health conditions, have already been matched with families in the United States.
"We request that you act in the best interest of these children and families by urging the PRC to fulfill and uphold the commitment the country has made," stated the lawmakers in their letter. They highlighted that American families are ready to provide long-term medical and emotional support to their adoptive children.
The letter also noted a recent State Department notice indicating that China might allow adoptions for families from certain countries. Grassley and his colleagues urged President Biden to ensure this opportunity is extended to U.S. families as well.
Among the cosigners are Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky and chairs of the Congressional Coalition on Adoption.
