Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) is set to celebrate Public Schools Week from February 24 to 28, marking the occasion with a series of events and activities. The week aims to honor the history and impact of publicly funded education across Wisconsin's 421 school districts and nationwide.
The celebrations will commence with Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson issuing a proclamation and participating in a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Greenfield Bilingual School on Monday. Mayor Johnson, an alumnus of Bay View High School and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, will be present at the event scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
Greenfield Bilingual School, which serves over 550 students from K3 to grade 8, has recently undergone a federally funded expansion project. This includes four new classrooms, conference spaces, and a full-service kitchen. The redeveloped schoolyard was opened last fall in collaboration with Reflo, an environmental education nonprofit.
Throughout the week, MPS encourages participation through various activities. Individuals are invited to share their public school success stories on social media using #MPSProud. They can also wear school gear or MPS colors—blue and gold—and express gratitude towards teachers and staff members.
Fans and alumni have the opportunity to contribute financially by making donations to MPS schools or programs via the MPS Foundation.
Tuesday will feature "Trivia Tuesday" on MPS Facebook and Instagram platforms at noon. Participants can win MPS merchandise by answering trivia questions about Wisconsin’s largest school district. Additionally, food trucks like Tots on the Street on Tuesday and Piña Mexican Eats on Wednesday will be available for staff lunches outside Central Services.
The celebration concludes on Friday with Central Services staff encouraged to wear jeans along with official MPS colors or spirit wear representing any public school they support.
