Milwaukee Recreation celebrated the grand reopening of Wick Playfield on May 6, alongside community members and local leaders. The event marked the organization's 10th full-site renovation in the city, adding to a series of improvements aimed at enhancing recreational spaces.
"This project reflects a significant investment in the neighborhood and in the city’s recreation and green space infrastructure," said Milwaukee Recreation director Brian Litzsey. "It’s a powerful example of Milwaukee Recreation’s commitment to providing all members of our community with access to quality green spaces and recreational facilities."
The renovated Wick Playfield, located at 4929 W. Vliet St., now features upgrades such as a modern playground design, splash pad, new basketball courts, plaza seating, synthetic turf baseball and softball diamonds, and improved lighting. Community input played a crucial role in these enhancements.
Community leaders attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony, emphasizing the importance of accessible recreational spaces. Alderwoman Sharlene Moore remarked, "Our community deserves the very best... when we invest back into the community, we invest back into our children."
Wick Playfield has undergone various transformations since its origin as a dump site. It served as temporary housing for returning veterans after World War II and remains an integral part of Milwaukee's history.
Superintendent Dr. Brenda Cassellius noted her attendance marked her first playfield unveiling with Milwaukee Recreation. She stated that "seeing the community already enjoying the revitalized spaces underscores the immediate and positive impact these investments are making."
Milwaukee Recreation continues its efforts with ongoing projects at Modrzejewski Playfield and designs underway for several others.
