Anna Szepieniec broke the school record in the long jump for the Milwaukee Panthers track and field team at the Jim Freeman/Clark Wood Open in Louisville, Kentucky, on April 25. Szepieniec, a junior who previously set the indoor long jump record this season, recorded a leap of 6.35 meters to finish second and surpass Samia Taylor’s previous mark of 6.13 meters set in 2013.
The achievement highlights ongoing progress for both individual athletes and the team as they compete in NCAA Division I athletics, according to the official website. The women’s track and field program participates in both indoor and outdoor competitions throughout its season.
In other events Friday, Kallie Volk finished sixth in javelin with a personal-best throw of 37.72 meters, placing her fifth all-time in program history for that event. Rachel Helm ran to a twelfth-place finish in the 800-meter dash with a time of 2:15.62, while Victoria Spagnola achieved a personal best of 1:02.96 for fifteenth place in the women’s 400-meter hurdles.
On the men’s side, Karsten Grundahl posted his own personal best by running fourth place in the men’s 800-meter run at 1:52.11. In men’s long jump competition, Kyril Griffin finished seventh with a leap of 7.21 meters—ranking ninth all-time among Panthers—while Anthony Buford placed eleventh at 6.93 meters.
The Milwaukee Panthers women’s track and field team is part of both NCAA Division I athletics and competes within the Horizon League according to their official website. The team operates out of Milwaukee, Wisconsin according to their official website, where it also supports student-athletes balancing academic responsibilities alongside athletic commitments as noted on its official site.
Milwaukee will continue competition on Saturday during day two of the Jim Freeman/Clark Wood Open as well as at UW-Whitewater’s Drake Alternative meet.
