A local Milwaukee bakery is ramping up the team spirit as the Bucks battle it out in the NBA finals.
Lopez Bakery, owned by Jorge and Cynthia Lopez, are displaying their support for the home team on their backs with uniforms sporting Bucks player Brook Lopez’s No. 11. Longtime Bucks fans, the couple decided it was time to show it when they discovered they shared a surname with the team’s center.
“We’ve always been fans of the Bucks—even more so now that, hey, we have a Lopez on board,” Cynthia Lopez told the Milwaukee City Wire. “I love the fact that the team just grew and made this wonderful Deer District, and I just went out and said, ‘You know what? We need to represent Lopez,' so I went out and bought t-shirts at the Deer District for all our employees—all No. 11.”
While they share a last name, there is no relation between the bakery owners and the basketball star.
Lopez Bakery has been operating since in 1973, just shortly before the Bucks’ last NBA finals win in 1974, Fox 6 reported. One of the first Latin bakeries in Milwaukee, they are known for their Mexican pastries and tamales.
Lopez Bakery goods can also be found at many farmers' markets around Milwaukee and the county.
Since donning the uniforms, Lopez said their Facebook and Instagram pages have blown up.
“I just posted pictures of all of them this past Saturday because I wanted pictures of all the farmers’ markets that we did and everybody that was wearing them so yes, we’ve gotten a lot of publicity from it,” she said.
Lopez said the No. 11 shirts will be part of their bakery uniform for the rest of the NBA season.
So far, Brook Lopez hasn’t visited the bakery.
“I would love for him to come in, but if he doesn’t that’s OK, we still support him,” Lopez said.
If he did drop by, Lopez said he would have to try a tamale.
This is Brook Lopez’s third season with the Bucks and 11th season in the NBA, according to ESPN. The Bucks are battling it out with the Suns for the NBA championship title.
Lopez is confident the Bucks will win.
