Milwaukee will soon be facing a big change as their mayor, a Milwaukee native, will soon begin a new chapter in his public service career.
Mayor Tom Barrett, currently in his fifth term as mayor of Milwaukee, Wisconsin was named the new U.S. ambassador to Luxembourg, replacing J. Randolph Evans.
At the announcement of the nomination, state officials took to their social media platforms to congratulate Barrett.
"Congratulations, @MayorOfMKE, on your nomination to be U.S. ambassador to Luxembourg! I wish you the very best in your new role, and I'm looking forward to working with @MKE_CC President Johnson to continue the good work happening in Milwaukee," Gov. Tony Evers tweeted on Aug. 27.
Barrett is a life-long Milwaukeean and has served in Wisconsin’s government in various positions for years, leaving a gap that will definitely be felt by the state's community.
"Congratulations to my friend Tom Barrett on his nomination as the new U.S. ambassador to Luxembourg. Tom has fought hard for the City of Milwaukee as mayor, serving with integrity and moving the city forward. I know he’ll do the same in Luxembourg," Sen. Tammy Baldwin tweeted on Aug. 25.
In comparison, Luxembourg only has a slightly larger population than Milwaukee.
Barrett has since also expressed his gratitude for the nomination.
"As a lifelong Milwaukeean, I will bring the values of our community to this new posting, values we share such as hard work, honesty and caring for others," he said in a statement to Wisconsin Public Radio.
