A portrait honoring late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is on display at Milwaukee City Hall through the end of the month.
Mayor Tom Barrett tweeted last week, sharing a photo of himself in front of the display, depicting an American flag draped over a casket surrounded by white roses.
“In commemoration of the anniversary of former Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s death last year, Milwaukee artist Niki Johnson’s 'Justice in Repose (RBG)' is on display in the City Hall Rotunda until Sept. 29,” Barrett said in his tweet. “It is a beautiful tribute to a remarkable woman.”
The art will be displayed from Sept. 18 to Sept. 29, according to a report by the Wisconsin Law Journal. This is the beginning of a series commemorating Justice Ginsburg. The series is free and open to the public to attend, the Journal states.
Named “Justice in Repose (RBG),” Milwaukee-based artist Niki Johnson created the display by hand-stitching tens of thousands of antique buttons into the image of Ginsburg’s flag-draped casket, according to the Journal. The art piece, which took eight months to complete, is 8 feet tall and 17 feet wide.
Ginsburg served as an associate justice of the Supreme Court from 1993 until her death in September of 2020, according to Wikipedia. She was appointed by former President Bill Clinton and succeeded by Amy Coney Barrett, who was nominated by former President Donald Trump in October 2020.
