Farrington’s Big Day Leads MKE MSOC Past IUPUI, 4-1

94

University of Milwaukee issued the following announcement on Oct. 2.

The Milwaukee men's soccer team responded to an early deficit with four unanswered goals in claiming a 4-1 victory over IUPUI Saturday afternoon at Michael Carroll Stadium.

"Big win today for the boys in a convincing fashion. Its always nice to score four goals," head coach Kris Kelderman said. "Very pleased with the scoreline and pleased overall with how we played."

The Panthers (4-4-1, 3-1-1 Horizon League) got a brilliant performance from Logan Farrington, who scored twice and assisted the other two goals to help his team improve to 5-1-1 all-time against the Jaguars (2-6-1, 1-4-0 Horizon League).

His six-point performance (2G/2A) marks the most points in a match for a Panther since Aaron Horvat had eight (4G) against Detroit Mercy Sept. 28, 2013.

"We had some really good individual performances today – Logan with a couple of goals and a couple of assists; I thought Huge Espejo played very well today; Paolo had a nice goal," Kelderman said. "All that with still having three starters out due to injury. A number of guys stepped up and did a really nice job today. Not only did we get the victory, but we felt really good about how we played."

The day did not start off well, however, seeing IUPUI strike for the first goal just 8:56 into the match.

"We gave up an early goal again in the game unfortunately, but the guys responded and hung in there and kept playing," Kelderman said.

The game went on for about 20 minutes with that scoreline, before a Farrington corner kick helped level the match. It was Paolo Gratton with the pretty volley inside the far post to make it 1-1 at the 27:26 mark, taking a quick rebound off a defender to drive home the shot.

Farrington then gave Milwaukee the lead before the break, weaving his way through the defense before netting second of the campaign in the 40th minute.

Up 2-1 at intermission and with a 13-6 advantage in shots over the first 45 minutes of the day, Milwaukee pressed for more and kept adding late.

Farrington set up Hugo Espejo for his first goal of the season in the 77th minute and then capped his individual performance with a brace in the 80th minute, with the assist going to Gabe Anguil.

Milwaukee ended the afternoon with advantages of 22-to-16 in shots and 8-to-5 in shots on goal, while the Jags did manage a 12-to-7 advantage in corner kicks. Farrington paced the offense with seven shots (3 on goal) in producing the 2G/2A/6-point outing. Adi Vaknin recorded five and Gratton four shots.

In net, Nick Chiappa enjoyed a solid day, making four saves the rest of the way after allowing the early goal for the victory – including a brilliant save in the 41st minute he did well to punch over the crossbar.

Up next, the Panthers step out of league play to battle Western Illinois Tuesday ahead of the big Chancellor's Cup meeting with Green Bay Saturday. The midweek game against WIU will get underway at 4 p.m.
