State Rep. LaKeshia Myers (D-Milwaukee) is inviting Milwaukee residents to participate in the discussion about the city’s redistricting.
According to Wisconsin law, when new census data becomes available every 10 years, local governments and the state legislature need to redraw the boundaries of election districts to accurately reflect the population. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the release of census data was significantly delayed. Milwaukee’s redistricting process is overseen by the Judiciary Legislation Committee of the Common Council.
“Your input in valuable. Please join the Milwaukee Redistricting Map Community Forum, tomorrow at 6, to discuss maximizing our communities’ political power,” Myers wrote in a Dec. 6 Twitter post.
According to Myers' post, the Milwaukee Redistricting Map Community Forum is hosting a discussion titled “Are we losing political power?” on Dec. 7 at 6 p.m. The event is sponsored by 10,000 Fearless MKE and discussion will take place at the African American Women’s Center, 3020 W. Vliet Street in Milwaukee.
The “10,000 Fearless” organization was inspired by a 2015 speech by Nation of Islam Minister Louis Farrakhan, according to The Final Call.
“I need 10,000 fearless Black men,” Farrakhan said. We gotta clean up our community, and there’s no way we can make a good people and leave them under the educational system of White Supremacy.”
