Veteran outfielder Andrew McCutchen has signed to join the Milwaukee Brewers after the Philadelphia Phillies declined to pick up his option for the 2002 season.
After signing a three-year, $50 million deal with the Phillies in 2018, McCutchen spent the last three seasons there, where he hit .237 with 47 homers and 143 RBIs, ESPN reported.
Now 35, McCutchen has played 13 MLB seasons, after breaking in with the Pirates in 2009. Over his first decade in the big leagues, he posted a wRC+ of at least 120 in each season except in 2016 when he finished at 105, MLB Trade Rumors reported.
One of McCutchen’s best overall seasons arguably came in 2013, when he hit 21 home runs, stole 27 bases and put up a line of .317/404/.508, wRC+ of 156, enroute to a NL MVP season highlighted by the Pirates making their postseason appearance since 1992, according to MLB Trade Rumors.
As the years have added up, McCutchen has remained potent at the plate, especially against left-handed pitching, hitting hit 37 home runs and slashing .232/.331/.441, wRC+ of 106 over the last two seasons, according to MLB Trade Rumors.
After the Brewers finished 95-67 last season largely on the backs of their dominant pitching, McCutchen joins the likes of newcomers Hunter Renfroe and Mike Brosseau in hopefully bolstering the offense. The trio joins holdovers Christian Yelich, Lorenzo Cain and Tyrone Taylor in a veteran-laden outfield.
