Milwaukee Police have charged a local man with running a red-light in a deadly early morning crash where witnesses said the 39-year-old victim was completely blindsided.
Yolanda Baxter was pronounced dead at the scene of the May 3 crash, which also left a 30-year-old Wauwatosa woman suffering from non-life-threatening injuries, and was taken to a hospital for treatment.
Fox6Now.com reports that the crash took place just before 6 a.m., at 35th and Lisbon, when a vehicle struck a second one after running a red light, causing that car to careen into Baxter, who was standing at the corner.
In the hours following the crash, neighborhood residents tried to make sense of the tragedy.
"I was upset because I seen that the building had been hit," Dominic Key told Fox after showing up for work that morning. After checking surveillance video, Key added he realized the situation was far more serious.
"It's a sad day. Someone lost their life," he added. "We're praying for her family and everybody else that was involved with the loss.”
Key said he often saw Baxter and she was a frequent customer at his establishment, adding staffers at the business were troubled knowing the crash was deadly.
“She comes in every day,” he said. “It's pretty sad." Fox6Now.com added that loved ones later identified Baxter as the victim and shared a picture of her with the website.
The Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office is now reviewing charges against the 27-year-old driver of the striking vehicle.
