WASHINGTON – U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) has joined 14 of his Senate GOP colleagues in requesting a meeting of the Conference to discuss the negotiations with President Biden and Senate Democrats regarding border security. In a letter addressed to Conference Chair John Barrasso, M.D. (R-Wyo.), the senators expressed their concerns about rushed and secret negotiations with Democrats, stating that such negotiations will not secure the border.

The letter, signed by Sen. Johnson and senators Mike Lee (R-Utah), Rick Scott (R-Fla.), J.D. Vance (R-Ohio), Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.), Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.), Josh Hawley (R-Mo.), Ted Budd (R-N.C.), Jim Risch (R-Idaho.), Roger Marshall, M.D. (R-Kan.), Ted Cruz (R-Texas), Eric Schmitt (R-Mo.), Mike Braun (R-Ind.), Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), and Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), requests that the Conference be held the week of January 8, 2024, once the House returns.

According to the senators, the American public deserves an open and transparent process, which cannot occur until the House reconvenes. They believe that negotiations with Democrats, who want an open border and who they claim caused the current crisis, should not be rushed or conducted in secret.

The full text of the letter can be found here and below:

"Dear Senator Barrasso,

We write to request that you call a meeting of the Conference to discuss Senate negotiations on securing the border. Rushed and secret negotiations with Democrats who want an open border and who caused the current crisis will not secure the border. The American public deserves an open and transparent process which cannot occur until the House returns the week of January 8, 2024. Accordingly, we request this Conference be held the week of January 8th, but not before."

The senators are calling for a thorough and transparent discussion on border security, emphasizing the need to address the concerns of the American public. By requesting a meeting of the Conference, they hope to ensure that the negotiations with President Biden and Senate Democrats result in effective measures to secure the border.
