A Tigerton man has been indicted by a federal grand jury for allegedly assaulting a postal carrier with a shotgun. Gregory J. Haanstad, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Wisconsin, announced the indictment on October 8, 2024. The accused, Benjamin L. Joos, aged 43, faces charges under Title 18, United States Code, Sections 111(a) and 111(b).
The indictment claims that Joos "knowingly and by means and use of a dangerous weapon, namely a shotgun, did forcibly assault, oppose, impede, intimidate, and interfere" with a female postal carrier on or about September 24, 2024. The incident occurred while she was performing her official duties.
If found guilty of the offense, Joos could face up to 20 years in prison and be fined up to $250,000.
The investigation into this case was conducted by the Shawano County Sheriff's Office alongside the U.S. Postal Inspection Service. Assistant United States Attorney Daniel R. Humble will handle the prosecution.
It is important to note that an indictment is merely a charge and does not serve as evidence of guilt. Joos is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt at trial.
