The Green Bay VA Health Care Center is set to host a re-dedication ceremony in honor of Milo C. Huempfner. The event is scheduled for Friday, December 13 at 10:30 a.m. and will be open to the public.
During the ceremony, attendees will hear remarks from VA administrators and members of Huempfner's family. A new display commemorating Huempfner's heroism during World War II will also be unveiled.
Milo C. Huempfner was noted for his actions during the Battle of the Bulge in December 1944, particularly in Leignon, Belgium. Despite the town being captured by German forces, he chose to stay without orders and continued operations against enemy forces within the city. His efforts included neutralizing an enemy machine gun position, capturing soldiers, destroying armored vehicles, and safeguarding a church so that locals could attend mass on Christmas Eve.
For these actions on December 23 and 24, 1944, while serving with the 551st Parachute Infantry Battalion, Huempfner received the Distinguished Service Cross.
