The Milwaukee Board of School Directors has confirmed Dr. Brenda Cassellius as the new superintendent for Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS). Her contract was approved during a special meeting on March 4, and she will assume her role on March 15.
Board President Marva Herndon expressed enthusiasm about Dr. Cassellius's appointment, stating, “On behalf of the board, I want to express my excitement for this new chapter in our school district.” She emphasized the importance of the superintendent's role as one of leadership and vision. Herndon added, “With Dr. Cassellius at the helm, the board is confident that our district will continue to rise to the challenges of an ever-changing educational landscape.”
Dr. Cassellius’s contract spans two years, adhering to Wisconsin state law requirements. She conveyed her gratitude and optimism upon taking up this responsibility: “I am eager to get to work, to meet our community, find ways to work together, and to start a new chapter for MPS.”
Dr. Cassellius brings a wealth of experience from her previous roles as superintendent of Boston Public Schools and Commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Education. Her career includes positions ranging from special education paraprofessional to academic superintendent for middle schools in Memphis City Schools.
During this transition period, MPS Interim Superintendent Eduardo Galván will support Dr. Cassellius. Director Jilly Gokalgandhi thanked Galván for his service during challenging times: “And over the last few months, you have led with extreme composure and kindness and collaboration.”
