Director Missy Zombor has been elected as the new president of the Milwaukee Board of School Directors, with Director Marva Herndon being named vice president. This appointment took place at the organizational meeting on Tuesday, April 25, marking the first session for recently elected Board members.
Reflecting on her new role, Zombor commented, “We’re entering a challenging but hopeful time for MPS.” Herndon formerly served as the Board president.
The newly elected Board members, who assumed their positions following the April 1 election, include Director Christopher Fons from District 5 representing the east side, Director Mimi Reza from District 6 on the south side, and Director Kate Vannoy from District 7 on the southwest side of Milwaukee. Director James Ferguson, representing District 4 on the west side, secured re-election on the same date.
Fons succeeds Jilly Gokalgandhi, the former vice president of the Board, while Reza takes over from Marcela “Xela” Garcia, and Vannoy fills the position left by Henry Leonard. The meeting on April 17 was the final one for Gokalgandhi, Garcia, and Leonard, all of whom had been elected to the Board in 2021 and chose not to seek re-election.
The district expressed appreciation for the outgoing Board members' contributions and extended a welcome to the newly appointed directors.
