Wisconsin has a new hometown hero, Olympic bronze medal winner, Molly Seidel.

“Molly makes Wisconsin proud! Congrats to @ByGollyMolly12. #Toyko2020,” U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) tweeted.

Seidel, a marathoner, completed the race in 2:27.20, the Milkwaukee Journal Sentinel reported. She is only the third U.S. woman to win a medal in the marathon.

She became the third U.S. woman in the history of the Olympics to win a medal in the marathon, the story said.

She is a 27-year-old native of Nashotah, the Journal Sentinel reported. This was only her third marathon and her third-place finish was considered an upset, the story said.

“I came in today with not a whole lot of expectations,” Seidel said, according to the Journal Sentinel.  “I was hoping to be in the top 10. Just trying to like stick my nose where it didn’t belong and just kind of get after it. I mean, Olympics only happens once every four years, you might as well take your shot.”

She was a standout distance runner at University Lake School in Hartland and Notre Dame, the story said.

Seidel has openly discussed her mental health issues and an eating disorder that prevented her from competing in the 2016 Olympics in Brazil, the Journal Sentinel said.
