Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley said that the county is suffering financially and that the funding they recently received is just to keep them afloat.
"Let me be frank: for MKE County, this is not 'once in a generation' or 'transformational funding,'" Crowley said in a Twitter post. "It’s a lifeline to keep critical services running. We're in dire financial straits and without intervention by 2027, will have no local dollars for local services."
In an op-ed article for Urban Milwaukee, Crowley claims that Milwaukee County has to use every dollar given to them by the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) efficiently in order to keep services afloat.
There is a huge budget gap that he estimates will have to be closed by $20 million every year for the next 16 years, meaning by 2027 there will be no funding for local services, according to his opinion post in Urban Milwaukee.
Crowley writes in the Urban Milwaukee op-ed that in an effort to persuade the local ARPA task force to use the funding for local services, financial health and keep programs and services for citizens going.
Gov. Tony Evers invested $25 million in American Rescue Plan Act funds in Milwaukee and Madison's public transit systems, according to State Rep. Christine Sinicki.
"After suffering a brutal blow at the hands of Republicans in the state budget, Milwaukee public transit will survive, thanks to Gov. Evers,"Sinicki said in a Twitter post.
