Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett has nominated Dana World-Patterson to serve on the Milwaukee Fire and Police Commission, according to a release earlier this week.

Barrett tweeted Nov. 9, sharing a link to the announcement and stating World-Patterson will bring a crucial perspective to the commission.

“I am nominating Dana World-Patterson, a prominent advocate for the victims of human trafficking and chairperson of the Human Trafficking Task Force of Greater Milwaukee, to serve on the Milwaukee Fire and Police Commission,” Barrett wrote in his tweet. “Dana World-Patterson will bring an important perspective to the Fire and Police Commission with her understanding of crime victims and role of public safety agencies in protecting vulnerable individuals. I thank her for her willingness to serve in this new role.”

If Dana World-Patterson is confirmed to the Commission position, she will be replacing outgoing commissioner Ann Wilson, the release states. In addition to serving as the chairperson of the Human Trafficking Task Force, World-Patterson founded Foundations for Freedom Inc., which supports women and girls who have been victims of trafficking and works to prevent further trafficking.

The Human Trafficking Task Force of Greater Milwaukee holds meetings on the fourth Tuesday of every month from 2 to 4 p.m. that are open to the public, the city website states. It has four subcommittees: Public awareness, service provision, education and legislation and works closely with Milwaukee’s Office of Violence Prevention and the Milwaukee Commission on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault.

Foundations for Freedom is working to eliminate human trafficking through housing, education and advocacy to help women and girls become less vulnerable. According to the National Human Trafficking Hotline, there were over 60 reported cases of human trafficking in Wisconsin in 2018. Victims are often members of vulnerable groups, such as runaway children, LGBTQ youth, victims of previous of youth and disabled children, the report states.
