A condo association in Waukesha is fighting to hold off the bulldozers, CBS 58 reported.

Last fall, the city ordered owners to evacuate the units, the story said. On Jan. 3, the Waukesha fire inspector issued an order to tear down the condos after structural damage was uncovered during the installation of new balconies, the station reported. The residents have appealed the razing order.

"Even if we do pursue going down the avenue of just bringing the building down, even that we weren't really given enough time," condo resident Alicia Halvensleben told the station. "So the appeal isn't necessarily to point a finger here, there. It's just to explore options."

By some estimates, the demolition would cost residents $40,000 per condo.

"That's a huge financial burden and then to know that we might be stuck with an additional $40,000," Halvensleben said.

The original razing order from the city stated that if the condo association doesn't demolish the building, the city will do the work and recoup the costs through a tax lien.

"The only way to help at this point would be for somebody to magically buy the building from us and pay off our mortgages," Halvensleben said.
