Milwaukee Public Schools will begin a series of early release days starting Wednesday, October 8, 2025. On these dates, students will be dismissed two hours earlier than usual to provide time for teacher training on the district's new literacy plan.
The district aims for teachers to deepen their understanding of reading science so that all students can learn to read at grade level. "The training provided for teachers that day will help them become experts in the science of reading, so all students learn to read at grade level."
Schedules for half-day kindergarten have been adjusted: morning sessions will last two hours, and afternoon sessions will start 1½ hours earlier than normal.
District officials acknowledge the schedule change may affect families’ routines and after-school care plans. "Families are asked to notify any daycare, family member, or friend affected by this schedule. Someone will have to receive children early if students travel by bus, or someone will have to pick up children earlier than usual." Families are encouraged to coordinate with caregivers as needed.
Schools are communicating directly with families about whether after-school care is available on early release days. Milwaukee Recreation is offering care at four hub locations from noon until 5 p.m., but families must arrange transportation for their children. Registration information is available at mkerec.net/schoolcare.
All students will still receive lunch during early release days; however, meal times may differ from regular schedules.
Future early release dates are scheduled for December 10, March 4, and April 15 later in the school year. Families with questions are advised to contact their child’s school.
