A Milwaukee chef has won a restaurant and is ready to move her business from her home.
Specializing in soul food, Rosetta Bond is taking her specialty to a brand-new restaurant.
“I’m known for my stuffed turkey legs, I sell them every Thursday,” Bond said, according to TMJ4. “They come with various items, I have alfredo, Cajun rice, macaroni and yams.”
Bond's restaurant, 1700 Pull Up, has been run out of her home for a couple of years and is looking forward to the new space thanks to Caitlin Cullen, the owner of Tandem, who gave Bond the restaurant complete with everything inside, according to TMJ4.
“Right now I’m renting a full-duplex and that’s my storage,” Bond said, according to TMJ4. “So I have the upstairs and the downstairs and I need it all for storage.
Cullen told TMJ4 that giving the restaurant to Rosetta was the spirit of community she's always wanted for that space.
“I was able to get jobs in kitchens all over the city and get paid to learn how to do something as a career and that opportunity is just not afforded to the young people that look different than me in the city,” Cullen said. “It’s not mine to sell off. I feel like it would do a disservice to everyone who has given something to us to try and profit off of it.”
Bond is proud to be another new black business owner in the area. TMJ4 reports that her grandmother was one of Lindsay Heights' first black women to own a business in the community.
“For me to come to 53205 and have a business in the same area code that my grandmother started in, it’s significant for me,” Bond said, according to TMJ4. “It’s big for my family."
Bond tells TMJ4 that her family roots have enjoyed putting on breakfasts with Santa and handing out free meals. With the new roof over her business, she looks forward to giving more.
"The tradition will continue," she said.
