Brewers' Luis Urias: "I see it as an opportunity to be healthy and get ready for the season."

Milwaukee Brewers infielder Luis Urias is taking a positive approach to the rehab time he will need to recover from the left quad injury that is expected to sideline him for the start of the season.

“I see it as an opportunity to be healthy and get ready for the season,” Urias said in a video posted to Twitter of the injury he suffered on March 20, while running the bases. “The first night I couldn't walk. It was painful. I'm moving around right now and feeling better every day...I feel bad because I want to be there playing and getting better, but...I see it as an opportunity to be healthy and get ready for the season.”

The veteran infielder was slated to be the team’s Opening Day third baseman, but now it’s expected to be several weeks into the season before he takes the field.

Delay or not, the Brewers think they have a good idea about what they’re getting with Urias, who connected on a career-high 23 homers last season to go with a 0.790 on-base plus slugging in a team-high of 570 plate appearances.

While Urias is out, manager Craig Counsell will look to make the most out of a reserves corps that includes Mike Brosseau, Jace Peterson and Pablo Reyes.

Still, Counsell is happy all the latest forecasts have Urias not missing much time, given he also figures as the primary backup to shortstop Willy Adames.

“The only thing I’d tell you is [Urías] is our best backup shortstop option. That’s probably not a position that Jace or Brosseau are very experienced at, so it leaves us thin there,” Counsell said.
