Milwaukee Brewers all-star hurler Brandon Woodruff is hoping his time on the shelf will be a short stay.
The Brewers recently moved to place Woodruff on the 15-day injury list with a high ankle sprain suffered in his last start against the rival St. Louis Cardinals. The move is retroactive to May 28.
"I don't think it's going to be a month-long deal or nothing," Woodruff told ESPN. "I'm hoping it's going to be a couple of weeks and I get to be back out there. I'll have to rest these first couple of days and let everything calm down."
Woodruff joins fellow all-star right-hander Freddy Peralta on the IL after he recently left a game experiencing shoulder pain that was later diagnosed as a right posterior strain. An All-Star for the first time last season, Peralta is 3-2 with a 4.42 ERA in eight games this season.
To fill the void, the Brewers called up Peter Strzelecki from Triple-A Nashville to replace Woodruff on the 26 man roster. Team officials added they are also hopeful that they caught Woodruff’s injury early enough that a few games off to rest will be all that is needed.
Making his major league debut, top pitching prospect Ethan Small gave manager Craig Counsell and his Brewers a boost, inducing eight swings and misses and fanning four Cubs over his first two innings as the Brewers belted three homers to rally to a 7-6 win in the first game of a Memorial Day doubleheader.
