German Fest was finally back for its 40th anniversary celebration over the weekend of July 29 to 31, returning to the lakefront at Maier Festival Park after initially being canceled due to COVID-19 concerns.
Once again, TMJ4.com News reports that German culture and heritage in Wisconsin were front and center at the event after missing a year because of the pandemic.
“Great weather and great fun at German Fest,” Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson tweeted July 30. “German Fest is on at the Henry Maier Festival Grounds!”
Held on the last full weekend of each July on the shores of Lake Michigan, this year’s event was hosted by Maier, opening at 3 p.m. on Friday afternoon and shutting down at 7 p.m. on Sunday evening.
Among the many celebrations and attractions this year was the Austrian band, Schürzenjäger and The Freistadt Alte Kameraden Band, dachshund derby, lots of traditional dancing and music and plenty of food.
In addition, fireworks displays were held on both Friday and Saturday nights.
