Gas prices were on the rise in Madison and across much of the country over the final week of September, jumping by 40 cents locally and by 3.4 cents on average in the United States.
With the increase, motorists in Madison face average prices of $3.73 per gallon, according to Sept. 26 figures provided by GasBuddy. Wisconsin is part of the Midwest and Great Lakes regions that have already seen huge price increases due in part to refinery issues, the war in Ukraine and maintenance concerns that all came about over a condensed period of time.
Experts caution there are warnings the price surge could continue at least over the short term.
“Hopefully, disruptions will be very limited due to [Hurricane] Ian,” GasBuddy representative Patrick Haan told NBC15.com. Ian could spark across-the-board disruptions.
“But there remain many factors driving prices both up and down across the country,” Haan added.
While the Milwaukee area also saw prices jump by about 20 cents per gallon, the increase in Madison was even higher, with at least one station there reported to be charging as much as $3.99, compared to the cheapest stations in the city.
After a short respite, NBC15.com reports the rise in national rise in gas prices represents the first increase over the past 14 weeks.
