The Milwaukee Police Department (MPD) has issued a second civil lawsuit against a driver accused of egregious reckless driving.

According to a press release, the City of Milwaukee is suing LaShawn Thomas for a second time. Thomas was served over Thanksgiving weekend after the Milwaukee Police Department requested the suit on Nov. 17. According to police, Thomas is a repeat egregious reckless driver.

"Streets are built to be safe spaces for everyone, whether you are walking, biking, scootering or driving. We must hold egregious reckless drivers accountable so that there is no one harmed while on the roads in Milwaukee," Mayor Cavalier Johnson wrote in a Nov. 28 Twitter post.

The lawsuit claims that Thomas' reckless driving is a continuous threat to the public, calling him a "public nuisance." Since 2017, Thomas has gotten 37 traffic citations such as reckless driving, failure to stop, unsafe passing and speeding. Thirteen of those citations have occurred in 2022 alone.

The press release states that MPD has identified approximately 20 offenders that have been ticketed more than 10 times in the past five years. The department states that it has notified those drivers that they may be subjected to a future lawsuit if their reckless driving behavior continues.

“MPD continues to work on a multifaceted approach to combat reckless driving and need assistance from everyone, including our community. The civil litigation approach against egregious reckless drivers is intended to send a clear message to all the chronic reckless drivers in Milwaukee that we take the safety of everyone on the roadways in our community very seriously," said Chief Jeffrey Norman, according to the press release.
