On July 6 the Zoning, Neighborhoods and Development Committee voted to recommend approval of legislation for a mixed-use development that would bring 91 affordable apartments with a center that provides cooking classes, urban farming and food entrepreneurship services to a long vacant city-owned property in the 1100 block of E. North Ave.
General Capital Group LLP and KG Development Group LLC are poised to develop the project, located on the edge of Riverwest in the 3rd Aldermanic District, and just west of University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee's RiverView Residence Hall. The files recommended for approval today included the land sale, a zoning change, and the creation of Tax Incremental District No. 116 (Riverwest Apartments and Food Accelerator). The files are expected to be taken up by the full Common Council when it meets on Tuesday, July 11.
The four-story building would feature the food/culinary/nutrition center on the ground floor, with apartments on the levels above.
Alderperson Jonathan Brostoff, who authored the legislative files approved today for the project, said the mixed-use development would "create much needed affordable housing and a Riverwest Food Accelerator with programming meant to benefit area residents.”

“The project will include a community garden, free cooking and nutrition classes, urban agriculture demonstration projects, satellite culinary classes offered by MKE Food School and Milwaukee Area Technical College, and reduced cost commercial kitchen time for entrepreneurs,” Alderperson Brostoff said.
“I am very excited about the project and grateful for the support today from my colleagues on the ZND Committee,” he said.
The July 11 Council meeting will start at 9 a.m. (in the third floor Council Chamber at City Hall, 200 E. Wells St.) and will be televised live on Spectrum cable and AT&T U-Verse in the City of Milwaukee and by the City Channel via streaming video on the city website at www.city.milwaukee.gov/Channel25.
