On July 11, the Common Council approved legislation directing the Department of Administration and the Office of Violence Prevention to expand Alert Neighbor Program in collaboration with the Mayor’s Office. The legislation (Common Council file #230110) was sponsored by Alderwoman Milele A. Coggs and Alderman Russell W. Stamper, II, and cosponsored by Alderman Mark Chambers, Jr., Alderman José Pérez, Alderwoman Marina Dimitrijevic, and Alderman Scott Spiker.
The program, created by Alderwoman Coggs and Alderman Stamper, is a partnership between neighborhood block clubs, the Milwaukee Police Department, the City, and local nonprofits to evaluate persisting neighborhood issues, such as crime, and develop strategies to reduce these problems.
The Alert Neighbor Program provides funding for physical improvements in the neighborhood that can range from crime watch signs and doorbell cameras, to porch lighting and more.
The Program also plans neighborhood improvement projects and hosts regular meetings with neighborhood block clubs to form crime prevention strategies and address safety concerns.
“We are very pleased with today’s approval to expand the Alert Neighbor Program,” Alderwoman Coggs and Alderman Stamper said. “And we would like to thank our colleagues for their support of this legislation, which will address community concerns across the entire city.”
