On Tuesday, U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) expressed his concerns about the Senate border supplemental bill during a press conference with Senate conservatives. According to Sen. Johnson, the bill does more harm than good as it fails to secure the border and hinders a future president's ability to do so. He emphasized that the American people, who overwhelmingly support securing the border, will not get what they want with this bill.
During the press conference, Sen. Johnson compared negotiating with Democrats on border security to negotiating with an arsonist to put out a fire. He stated, "I've been saying for quite some time now that negotiating with them [the Democrats] on this issue is like negotiating with an arsonist to put out the fire that arsonist set."
Sen. Johnson also criticized President Biden's administration for not utilizing his authority to secure the border. He suggested that the president should have started by acknowledging the authority he already has and addressing any weaknesses in that authority. Sen. Johnson emphasized that Republicans would have been willing to give President Biden the authority he claims to want in order to secure the border.
In a separate interview with Harris Faulkner on The Faulkner Focus, Sen. Johnson expressed his frustration over how the Senate border negotiations were kept hidden from the American people. He criticized President Biden and his Democrat colleagues for their open border policies, stating, "We have a lawless administration. We have Democrat governance in all of these cities that are creating lawless cities. We are treating migrants with kid gloves, whether it's through our airports or our judicial systems."
Sen. Johnson also criticized the Senate border negotiations for being rushed and lacking proper public debate. He said, "We don't want a bill that will normalize thousands of illegal migrants a day and hamstring a future president. And, you know, from what I've seen so far, and you’re going to have to take a look at the actual text, we haven't seen that yet, which is also outrageous. It should have been debated in public. You know, the public has a right to see this."
During an interview on Sunday Night in America with Trey Gowdy, Sen. Johnson discussed the problem of negotiating with Democrats who want an open border. He praised President Trump for using existing law to secure the border and criticized President Biden for dismantling successful programs put in place by his predecessor.
Sen. Johnson also expressed his concerns about the Senate border bill, stating, "Republicans want to secure the border. This is the top priority. I'm not going to vote for a bill that is going to hamstring a future president by setting limits, thresholds before the president can actually do what the president already has the authority to do. So first, do no harm, and my concern about the Senate bill, you know, we're going to have to analyze it, is it will do more harm than good."
Overall, Sen. Johnson's remarks highlight his concerns about the Senate border bill and the Democrats' handling of the border crisis. He emphasizes the need to secure the border and criticizes the rushed and secretive nature of the negotiations. Sen. Johnson believes that the bill will do more harm than good and hinder a future president's ability to address the border crisis effectively.
