The Milwaukee women's tennis team faced a formidable opponent in Georgia Gwinnett College, the NAIA's top-ranked team and seven-time defending National Champions. The match took place on Thursday afternoon at the GGC Tennis Facility in Lawrenceville, Georgia, with the Grizzlies securing a 6-1 victory over the Panthers.
Georgia Gwinnett maintained their perfect season record of 13-0 by winning two out of three doubles matches before dominating in singles play. Despite losing the doubles point, Milwaukee's Nadiia Konieva and Babette Burgersdijk achieved a notable win against GGC's Stephanie Fernandez and Iryna Lysykh with a score of 6-3 at No. 1 doubles. This victory was significant as it came against the nation's third-ranked doubles team.
In singles competition, Evelina Anastasi from Milwaukee stood out by defeating Carol Mora, ranked No. 66 nationally, in three sets: 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (10-5). Head coach Mark Goldin commented on his team's performance: "We came out in doubles slow – we lost the energy battle – which is rare for us because we are usually mentally tough in everything we can control."
Goldin also praised his players' efforts during singles matches: "We made the adjustment in singles and fought out every point super-hard," he said. "Evelina played amazing tennis and won her match and Babette and Nadiia won a tough doubles match considering it was their first time playing together."
The Grizzlies entered this matchup with impressive cumulative records of 29-1 in doubles and 51-2 in singles for the season. Looking ahead, Milwaukee will return to Wisconsin to prepare for their Horizon League opener against Oakland next Saturday. The match is scheduled to begin at 3:30 PM CT.
"I am confident that we are ready going into conference," Goldin stated. "We are really looking forward to using this next week of training to clean up a few more things to get ready for Oakland next weekend!"
