The Milwaukee track and field team achieved notable success on the first day of the Horizon League Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan. The team secured three top-three finishes.
Head coach Andrew Basler expressed satisfaction with the team's performance, stating, "Day one went extremely well for both genders. We picked up more points than projected in women's discus and women's javelin." He highlighted the contributions of five seniors in these events and noted Jeremiah Johnson's impressive performance in the discus.
Cynthia Hernandez earned a third-place finish in the women's discus with a throw of 42.40 meters. Johnson matched this achievement in the men's discus with a throw of 48.59 meters. Olivia Busch also secured a podium position by finishing third in the javelin throw with a distance of 36.06 meters.
Additional contributions came from Ari Miller, who placed sixth in the javelin, and Tabitha Wechlo and Samantha Satterfield, who finished sixth and seventh respectively in the discus.
In men's javelin, Liam Richards led Milwaukee's efforts by finishing fourth with a throw of 50.41 meters. Tony Bretall and Jack Misky followed closely behind, securing sixth and eighth places respectively.
Richards excelled in the decathlon as well, leading after five events with victories in multiple disciplines. Misky and Bretall are currently positioned second and third overall.
Anna Szepieniec is leading the heptathlon after four events, having won both the 100m hurdles and 200m races.
Basler commented on their performances: "On the women's side, our heptathletes had a strong day one... On the men's side, our decathletes are holding down the top three spots."
In other results, Carter Eckhoff qualified for Sunday's final heat in the men's 1500m prelims with a time of 3:54.12. Cailin Kinas and Anelise Egge qualified on the women's side with times of 4:39.89 and 4:43.27 respectively.
After today's competitions, Milwaukee's women stand second overall with 20 points while Youngstown State leads at 23 points. The men rank fourth with 18 points; Purdue Fort Wayne and Youngstown State share first place at 31 points each.
Events will continue tomorrow starting at 9:00 AM with further decathlon and heptathlon heats followed by other scheduled events beginning at 11:00 AM.
