Down a goal late in the match, Kayla Rollins scored her sixth goal of the season to help the Milwaukee women's soccer team secure a 1-1 draw against Detroit Mercy. The game took place on Sunday afternoon at Engelmann Stadium.
The Panthers, with a record of 4-6-2 overall and 3-0-1 in the Horizon League, had 20 shots during the match against the Titans, who hold a similar record of 4-6-2 overall and 2-0-2 in the league. Despite their efforts, Milwaukee was hindered by weather conditions and effective saves from Detroit Mercy's defense. This result extended Milwaukee's unbeaten streak in conference play to 23 games but ended their run of 17 consecutive victories over Detroit Mercy, which began in 2007.
Head coach Kevin Boyd commented on the team's performance: "We've had 40 shots in the past two games and have scored two goals. We have had 23 or 24 corners and no goals off that. This is on us, it's our quality and finishing." He also acknowledged Detroit Mercy's strategy: "Credit to Detroit, they played hard and had their plan the whole time."
Both teams faced challenging winds throughout the match. Boyd noted, "There's no question the wind was a factor." He explained how it affected both halves of play for his team.
Milwaukee nearly took an early lead when Rollins received a pass from Lainey Higgins but narrowly missed scoring at just under five minutes into the game. Later, Senya Meurer almost scored from about 25 yards out before her shot hit the crossbar.
Despite dominating possession with ten shots and seven corner kicks by halftime, Milwaukee could not score until after intermission. Jenni Andjelic attempted to break through in the second half but was denied by Marisa Silver's save for Detroit Mercy.
Detroit Mercy capitalized first with a goal from a corner kick at approximately 74 minutes into play. However, Milwaukee responded four minutes later when Higgins set up Rollins for an equalizing goal.
Neither team managed to create significant chances after that point as they continued exchanging plays until full-time.
Overall statistics showed MKE leading with advantages such as shot count (20-12) while maintaining majority possession (62%). In goalkeeping duties Parker Donahugh recorded five saves despite seeing her scoreless streak end at over six hours since mid-September.
Milwaukee will take some rest before returning October tenth hosting Youngstown State scheduled for evening kickoff time around seven o'clock p.m., local time.
