The Milwaukee women's cross country team participated in the Joe Piane Invitational at Notre Dame on Friday. Anelise Egge made headlines by breaking the school record in the 5k race with a time of 17:18.2, surpassing the previous record of 17:26.7 set by Elise Sigg in 2010. Egge secured seventh place out of 182 runners, marking her fourth consecutive Top-10 finish this season.
"Big congrats to Anelise on breaking our cross country 5k school record," head coach Andrew Basler stated. "She put herself right up front from the beginning and competed well."
The Panthers finished 15th out of 23 teams, scoring a total of 388 points.
"Race to race, I think we're moving in the right direction," said associate head coach Jake Reilly. "Technically and tactically we're doing well; the times just aren't quite there yet."
Four out of seven Milwaukee runners achieved new personal bests in the 5k event. Cailin Kinas finished in 71st place with a time of 18:30.0, followed by Ally Schmitz at 18:36.9 and Joely Overstreet with a time of 19:12.1.
Basler concluded, "As a unit I was expecting to see the women in better position on what is a flat, fast course. They need to figure out a way to race to the level of their workouts, which have been going great. They are all capable of a lot more and I have confidence they will keep improving over this last month."
The team is set to compete next at Wisconsin Lutheran's Warrior Classic on Saturday, October 5th at 11:00 a.m., followed by Bradley's Pink Classic on October 18th as their final preparation before the Horizon League Championships.
